The Enterprise IT Asset Disposal Checklist

Most disposal programmes fail on preparation, not execution. Before a single asset leaves your premises, three things should be settled: what is being disposed, who owns the data risk, and what evidence the business needs afterwards.

Start with the asset register. A serial-level list — even an imperfect one — turns a vague pickup into a measurable programme, and it becomes the reference against which every certificate is later matched.

Decide the data policy per device class. Software erasure is sufficient for most endpoints; physical destruction is appropriate where policy or regulation demands it. Record the decision, because auditors will ask why.

Finally, agree the reporting format up front. Recovery value, diversion volume and certificate coverage should arrive in a form your finance, compliance and sustainability teams can each use without rework.
